Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing 1-0 to the United States  in their last Group D match in Vancouver.

The African champions did well to hold their own against the two-time world champions and only let in the only goal on the stroke of half when Abby Wambach out-jumped the defenders to put her team ahead.

The hard-fighting Nigerian girls set about making several efforts to equalize but could not convert their chances as the U.S. team shored up their defenceline.

After the match, Coach Edwin Okon said the game was a good one and wished his opponents well in their subsequent games.

“It was a good game and we could have taken something out of it but for the loss of concentration of my defence that led to the American goal. I congratulate US for the victory and wish them well in the tournament,” he said.

The Super Falcons ended their campaign with one point, having drawn Sweden 3-3 in their opener and lost 2-0 to Australia.
