Celebration continued unabated in the camp of Akwa United FC of Uyo after the boys from the Land of Promise landed the prestigious Charity Cup on Wednesday, making the team officially the best in the country. The Akwa Boys edged Enyimba FC 4-3 on penalties after regulation time finished scoreless at the National Stadium, Abuja.

Enyimba goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai and Ifeanyi George fluffed their kicks in the shoot-out, to give Akwa joy. It made it three trophies in less than three months for the boys from Uyo.

The Charity Cup, which traditionally opens the season, is contested for by the champion team of the elite League and the winner of the Federation Cup.

Akwa United swept aside better –fancied Lobi Stars FC of Makurdi to claim the Federation Cup in November last year, and earlier in the month claimed the Super Four diadem.

At the weekend, the team showed that its form is no fluke, beating Vita Club Mokanda of Congo 1-0 in a CAF Confederation Cup first round, first leg match in Pointe Noir.

Victory on Wednesday will stand Akwa United in good stead for the kick-off of the Nigeria Professional Football League on Sunday, and for their CAF Confederation Cup return leg against Vita Club Mokanda in Uyo on February 27.
