Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Canada, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, has urged the Super Falcons to beat USA in their last group match as a birthday gift to him.
Speaking on Tuesday morning in the team’s hotel in the company of his wife, Maduekwe said he just celebrated his birthday and as such, he is expecting victory over the Americans as birthday gift from the girls.
“If you defeat USA, the only remaining super power, you will become super powers in sports yourself. You girls must be resilient. You go into the battle today knowing that your victory can make all the difference; you should go in there and make your nation proud.
“I look forward to hugging you in victory after the match. Be assured that your coming to Canada is enough for us, but we need the victory as well,” he said.
In her response, Captain Evelyn Nwabuoku thanked the High Commissioner for coming to visit the team and for his kind words of encouragement.
“By God’s grace, today will mark our first-ever victory over the USA. We are going to give our all and by God’s grace we will win and qualify for the next round,” Evelyn said.
